Our Honest Silver Cross Pram Review (and Why We Switched!)

Right, let’s talk prams. Staring at the endless options online, deciding to go into a shop and feeling totally overwhelmed. It’s a big decision, and you want to get it right. We definitely felt that pressure when we were choosing our first pram!

We originally went with a Silver Cross pram with a bassinet. It felt like the classic, quintessential pram choice, didn’t it? And we were initially impressed. The quality felt undeniably good, and it looked so smart.

The Good and the Not-So-Good

It’s important to be honest, so here’s the lowdown. We found our Silver Cross wasn’t quite the perfect fit for us. It looked beautiful, yes, but practicality-wise, there were a few niggles.  Weight and folding were the biggest reasons for our swap.  I feel its probably worth saying that it was me that struggled more – I am rather short and petite, hubby is a lot taller and built like a slab of concrete.

Firstly, it didn’t fold completely flat and was a bit of a pain. Boot space is precious, especially with all the other baby paraphernalia you accumulate, and wrestling a bulky pram into the car became a regular struggle for me especially, to the point where I started to avoid car journeys unless they were absolutely necessary.

Another thing we noticed was the weight. It was quite heavy to push and manoeuvre, especially up and down kerbs. Supermarket trips can be tiring enough without having to wrestle a heavyweight pram! And although the four in-line, same-size wheels looked sleek, we found it a bit rough and unruly on anything other than perfectly smooth pavements. Navigating cobbled streets or bumpy park paths felt like a workout! We live in a semi-rural town with lots of bumpy paths, I felt like our cub as being bounced around all over the place!  As our cub got bigger, I opted for our baby carrier instead where possible.

Why We Made the Switch

After a while, we decided to switch to a Joie Versatrax pram with a bassinet. Honestly, it was a game-changer! The wider base and larger rear wheels make it incredibly stable, even on uneven terrain. Plus, the bassinet collapsing flat for storage is a dream, especially when travelling. It fits in the boot so much more easily.

It’s also noticeably lighter than the Silver Cross, which makes a huge difference for everyday use. Pushing it feels so much easier, and it’s much more nimble to steer. Overall, we’re so much happier with this pram.

Our Top Tip for Choosing a Pram

If we could offer one piece of advice from our experience, it’s to think about your lifestyle and needs. Do you live in a city with lots of pavements, or are you more likely to be on rougher terrain? Do you have a small car boot? How important is portability for you?

My biggest piece of advice is go into a shop and give them a little test drive! Happy hunting!!
