An absolute favourite in our house. It’s a fantastic place for toddlers to get up close to all sorts of amazing creatures, from meerkats to reptiles, with both indoor and outdoor areas – so even when the rain is properly set in, there’s plenty to keep little explorers busy under cover. We’ve spent many happy hours here and it’s always a winner.

Imagination Street, Astwood Bank

A lifesaver on rainy days. It’s packed with soft play, role-play zones and even a little race track for budding Lewis Hamiltons. Ours could spend hours lost in their own little world there – and we’ve been known to sneak in a coffee and a slice of cake while they explore. That’s what we call a parent win.

Attwell Farm

For a more traditional farm day (with a rainy-day escape hatch), Attwell Farm is lovely. It’s a gentle introduction to farm animals for younger toddlers, and the indoor soft play barn is perfect for letting off steam whatever the weather. There’s something surprisingly calming about watching your little one meet the animals.

Mini Valley, near Stratford-upon-Avon

Slightly further afield but well worth the trip, Mini Valley is a little haven for animal lovers, with plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to explore. A proper adventure without a proper drive.

Making your own adventures at home

Of course, sometimes venturing out just isn’t an option. That’s when the creativity kicks in. Building a den is always a hit in our house – blankets, pillows and chairs, and suddenly the living room is a magical fort. Simple sensory play works wonders too, whether that’s dried pasta in a bowl or a batch of homemade playdough.

Our other quick wins, tested extensively on our own two cubs:

• Painting with watercolours (mess-free versions are always a plus)
• Sticker books and colouring
• Building towers with blocks or Duplo
• A kitchen dance party – brilliant for burning off energy

And for when it’s too hot, not too wet

Sometimes it’s the heat that drives everyone indoors. On those days we go for cool, calm play: water in the sink with plastic cups and toys, or a bowl of ice for little hands to explore. Simple, surprisingly absorbing, and no soft play queue in sight.
